This workshop will go back to the basics by reviewing the Eight Principles of Play Therapy by Virginia Axline and critically examine and update them using Nick Walker’s Neuroqueer Theory in order to create a play therapy practice that is inclusive to all. Play therapy practice can often hold as standard ways of playing that exclude and pathologize natural ways of existing in the world. Rewriting the Eight Principles will allow participants to examine their own internalized biases that get in the way of providing true neurodiversity affirming therapy to young people. ***Training Objectives: Describe the history and basic theory of non-directive play therapy. Show an understanding of neurodiversity affirming play therapy. Demonstrate the application of updated and inclusive play therapy principles in their own play therapy practice.

Participants will learn the history and theory of Sandplay therapy in the Jungian/Kalff tradition. Participants will learn about setting up a sand tray and miniatures, will learn how to hold the space when a client is working in the sand, and will examine examples of symbols and the way they are used in symbolic play and metaphor. Participants will explore the various meanings of different symbols, especially in the context of personal and cultural history in sand play therapy. ***Training Objectives: Describe the history and basic theory of sand play therapy. Through real life case examples, participants will review play therapy case vignettes related to the therapeutic relationship, parents and family, confidentiality, professional responsibility regarding mandated reporting, coordinating care with other professional providers, evaluation/assessment, supervision and consultation, and use of technology. ***Training Objectives: Select and implement a decision-making model to use with ethical dilemmas in play therapy practice. Apply licensing rules and code of ethics, APT Play Therapy Best Practices, Paper on Touch, and technology guidelines to various play therapy cases. Describe current research for play therapy practice, recommendations, and guidelines of boards and associations regarding the use of social media and telehealth sessions.

Participants will work individually, in dyads, and small groups to practice skills and experience the skills in order to deepen their understanding of non-directive play therapy and its powerful impact on the child. Using the playrooms at Seven Corners Psychotherapy, this will be an immersive experience to level up ones understanding of self and play therapy. ***Training Objectives: Participants will be practice three to five play therapy skills. Participants will receive feedback from peers and instructors on their implementation of play therapy skills. Participants will practice limit setting in individual and group settings. On the one hand, it is wonderful when a child is ready to move on. On the other hand, it is a loss of a deep and important relationship for both the child and the therapist. This workshop will look at when it is appropriate to end, how to create a positive end to a therapeutic relationship, and how to handle it when we can’t have the ending we want. ***Training Objectives: Participants will identify three signs that it is time for a play therapy relationship to end. Participants will practice discussing terminations and endings with clients and parents. Participants will identify two ways to handle abrupt terminations.
